Backpacking Program

Our Backpacking Units

ENTERING GRADE 6-12 IN THE FALL DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE
We have three backpacking units that vary based on your camper's experience level.  Together they are a perfect progression for your girl's backpacking skills.  Not all packing units run all sessions so you will have to check the annual schedule for details.  Girls do not need to go through the progression as outlined below but can "jump in" to the unit that matches their skill level.  Campers will learn teamwork, independence, and cooperation as they challenge themselves on the trail.  When not on the trail, campers get to experience the usual camp fun.
REDWOOD ROVERS
ENTERING GRADES 6 & 7 IN THE FALL

Discover the beauty of California while learning basic backpacking skills including carrying your own gear during a one-night / two-day hike.  We will work up to our overnight trip with several lengths of day hikes in and around camp.  Our ultimate 3-mile trek will begin and end at Waddell Beach.  New backpackers welcome!  All backpackers need to be in good physical condition; interested in hiking; along with providing or borrowing their own gear (i.e. boots, backpack and sleeping bag).  Campers are required to attend a pre-camp meeting in June, date and location to be advised.
TRAIL TREKKERS
ENTERING GRADES 8-12 IN THE FALL

Marvel in the magic of the majestic redwoods as you continue to learn essential backpacking skills, while carrying your own gear on a two-night / three-day trek through the state park system surrounding camp in the Santa Cruz coastal mountains.  This is a 13.5-mile hike with spectacular scenery including views of the Pacific Ocean.  We will start our trek near camp and connect to the Skyline to the Sea trail and end at Waddell Beach.  New backpackers welcome!  All backpackers need to be in good physical condition; interested in hiking; along with providing or borrowing their own gear (i.e. boots, backpack and sleeping bag).  Campers are required to attend a pre-camp meeting in June, date and location to be advised.
PACIFIC PACKERS
ENTERING GRADES 9-12 IN THE FALL

Discover the mysteries of Big Basin, while you continue to refine your backpacking skills, carrying your own gear on a three-night / four-day 23-mile trek departing from Camp Butano Creek, and ultimately connecting to the Skyline to the Sea trail, to finish your journey at Rancho del Oso Nature & History Center / Waddell Beach.   Experienced backpackers welcome!  All backpackers need to be in good physical condition; interested in hiking; along with providing or borrowing their own gear (i.e. boots, backpack and sleeping bag).  It is recommended that campers attend a pre-camp meeting in June, date and location to be advised.
